Queen Latifah
Dana Elaine Owens - better popularly referred to as Queen Latifah - is an American actress, rapper and a singer. Her performance as a singer, music actor, filmmaker and TV performer has garnered the actress two Screen Actors Guild Awards and two Image Awards. She also was awarded a Grammy Award and six other Grammy nominations. Queen Latifah was raised in Newark, NJ. She is the daughter of Rita Owens, Sr. and Lancelot Owens Jr. Her parents divorced at the age of Latifah was ten years old. Latifah was born into the Baptist church and she attended Catholic high school located within Newark New Jersey. The stage name Latifah meaning delicate and very compassionate in Arabic was given by her cousin when she was eight. Being a tall girl, at 5'10, Latifah was a power forward on the basketball team at her high school. in a school show, she sang Home from The Wiz. Latifah first began to beatbox with the Ladies Fresh. Latifah was a part of in the Flavor Unit in its original version, made up of a team of MCs with producer DJ Mark The 45 King. Mark James (aka DJ Mark the 45King) recorded a demo for Queen Latifah her rap Princess of the Posse. The recording was given to host Yo! MTV Raps Faddy. The single caught the eye to Tommy Boy Music employee Dante Ross who signed Latifah and in 1988 issued her first track Wrath of My Madness.
